Your Dental Post-Op Instructions From Our Care Team
Your dental post-op instructions play a big role in how smoothly you heal after a procedure. At Newkirk Dental Center, we want every patient — including those who are new or have felt uneasy about dental care in the past — to know exactly what to expect once you leave our chair. We accept Medicaid and most major insurance plans to help make treatment financially accessible, and our relationship-first culture means you are always treated like family. If you have any questions at any point, our team is here for you.
After Your Procedure — What to Expect
Recovery looks different for everyone, but some things stay the same. Your body needs time and rest to rebuild tissue and prevent complications. Follow the care steps we give you, and don't hesitate to reach out if something feels off.
The First 24 Hours
Your body starts healing right away. For the first day, focus on rest and gentle care. Keep your head elevated when lying down to reduce swelling. Don't rinse your mouth vigorously or spit, as this can dislodge blood clots that protect the healing site. If you were given gauze, keep it in place for the time your dentist recommended.
Managing Discomfort and Swelling
Mild to moderate discomfort and swelling are normal after many procedures. Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face in 20-minute intervals. Take pain relievers exactly as directed. If your dentist prescribed medication, use it as instructed. Over-the-counter options like ibuprofen can also help — check with your care team first if you have any health concerns.
Post-Op Instructions by Procedure Type
The type of care you need depends on the procedure you had. Below are guidelines for common treatments.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
After an extraction, protect the empty socket. Avoid sucking through a straw, smoking, or aggressive rinsing for at least 3-5 days. Eat soft foods and chew on the opposite side. Gentle salt-water rinses after the first 24 hours can help keep the area clean. Watch for signs of dry socket — severe pain a few days later — and call us if that happens. Extractions are routine, and our team is ready to help you through recovery.
After a Root Canal
You may have soreness in the tooth and gums for a few days. Over-the-counter pain medicine usually handles it well. Avoid chewing on that tooth until you get a permanent crown or filling placed. Keep the area clean with gentle brushing and flossing. If you have noticeable swelling or the bite feels high, let us know.
Following Oral Surgery (Wisdom Tooth Removal, Bone Grafting)
For more involved surgery, plan for several days of quiet recovery. Stick to liquids and soft foods. Use prescribed mouth rinses if given. Don't brush near the surgical site for the first day. Swelling often peaks at 48 hours, then gradually goes down. Cold packs the first day and warm compresses after that can ease soreness. If you had bone grafting, protect the site carefully — your body is laying down new bone, and it needs a stable environment.
After a Crown, Filling, or Dental Bonding
These procedures usually have a very short recovery. You might feel some temperature sensitivity for a day or two. Chew gently on that side until your bite settles. If your new crown feels high or a filling feels rough, call us so we can adjust it. Normal brushing and flossing can resume right away, but be gentle around the treated tooth.
Eating, Drinking, and Activity After Dental Surgery
What you put in your body matters during recovery. Stick with soft, cool or lukewarm foods for the first few days. Smoothies, yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs are good choices. Avoid hot drinks, alcohol, carbonated beverages, and anything crunchy or chewy. Wait until the area feels comfortable before easing back into regular food.
For activity, take it easy for at least 24-48 hours. No heavy lifting, intense exercise, or bending over — these can increase bleeding and swelling. After a couple of days, you can slowly return to normal activity if you feel up to it.
